SEO Still Wins in the AI Era — Here's Why
Every year someone declares SEO dead. This year the headline has AI in it. The reality is less dramatic: AI search is built on top of traditional search, not instead of it. Google's AI Overviews draw from indexed pages. ChatGPT's browsing leans on search results. If a page cannot be found and parsed by a conventional crawler, the AI layer has nothing to quote.
So the question for a Hong Kong SME is not "SEO or GEO?" It is whether your site passes the fundamentals — because both layers depend on them.
The fundamentals that keep paying
These are unglamorous, and that is exactly why most sites miss them:
- One page, one intent. A page about "website design" that also rambles about apps, hosting, and maintenance ranks for nothing. We keep 網頁設計 and 網頁開發 as one commercial intent — split them and you get two thin pages.
- Titles and descriptions written for humans scanning results. Not keyword soup.
- Fast, mobile-first pages. Most local searches happen on a phone, often over mobile data.
- Real content depth where it matters. A clinic page that explains booking, doctors, and what Cap. 231 means for their advertising outclasses any stock template.
- Clean technical ground. Sitemap, canonicals, hreflang for zh-HK and English, no stray noindex tags, no blocked AI crawlers.
Where SME sites actually fail
In our experience it is rarely one big mistake. It is a pile of small ones: a template with duplicated titles, English pages bolted onto a Chinese site, a blog last updated in 2022, and metadata that describes the wrong business. Each one is survivable. Together they make the site invisible.
What good looks like
A site that:
- states clearly who it serves and what it does, in both languages
- has one page per commercial intent, not ten pages chasing one keyword
- gives search engines and AI systems the same clean facts
- stays maintained — because stale content sinks in both classic and AI search
That is the standard we build to. If your current site is failing the fundamentals, a rebuild usually pays for itself faster than years of patching. Message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly which side you are on.
